The Annual Meeting for the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce will be held next week on Thursday, January 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Kennon House in Gasburg, VA. We will reflect on our accomplishments in 2014 and look ahead to 2015. We encourage all Chamber members to attend this meeting.

He has dedicated he professional career to rural America. Reed has worked in Southern Virginia for more than a decade, is a resident of Clarksville and a graduate of Marshall University.

He joined Virginia’s Growth Alliance in October of 2013 as the executive director. Since joining the Alliance, Reed has overseen the expansion of the Alliance from 6 members to 11, making it the largest regional economic development group in the Commonwealth at over 4,374 square miles. The member communities have announced over $829 million dollars in new investment and over 1,500 jobs. They have also successfully organized to lobby for a much needed natural gas line to serve the region. Additionally, VGA has spearheaded initiatives that created the Shop Local (shoplocalvga.com), Entrepreneur (vgagroundswell.com) and Tourism (virginiasgreatadventures.com) websites, social media workshops, entrepreneur training program with Longwood University - UpStart -, the Regional Resource Directory and other exciting projects that you will hear more about in the future.

At the Annual Meeting, we will also take time to explore the concept of entrepreneurship. According to BusinessDictionary.com, entrepreneurship is defined as, “The capacity and willingness to develop, organize and manage a business venture along with any of its risks in order to make a profit. The most obvious example of entrepreneurship is the starting of new businesses. In economics, entrepreneurship combined with land, labor, natural resources and capital can produce profit. Entrepreneurial spirit is characterized by innovation and risk-taking and is an essential part of a nation's ability to succeed in an ever-changing and increasingly competitive global marketplace.”

The Lake Gaston region is richly populated with entrepreneurs, and there is still a vast amount of untapped entrepreneurial spirit. Our region is a region of potential, and the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce, along with our board of directors and our membership, are ready to help guide this area into a successful future for businesses, municipalities, non-profit organizations, residents and visitors.
